Julio Nickels, the solo project of experimental songwriter Jason Orlovich, shares the new single and video for “The Grace Notes” from his debut album, Feeling Fickle, out July 12th on his own Like Literally media imprint.
Directed by award-winning Swedish designer and visual artist Elle Kunnos de Voss, the handcrafted animation explores one unremarkable night in a half-empty provincial club. “I’ve known Elle for years and watching her work across mediums, from opera to theater, I knew she could really abstract this scene for me,” Orlovich says. Taking inspiration from the complete album in text, Kunnos de Voss wanted to create a parallel world to the lyrical journey she was following on the page: finding redemption in the dark, falling in love on the run, VIP rooms and grenadine-soaked floors.
Recorded in Bayonne, France, Orlovich says the song already lived many lives and the video is just another manifestation of the record’s collaborative journey. “Lyrically, I wanted the song to work around a simple couplet, something with a noir tinge about this band called ‘The Grace Notes’ that never really make a sound, but then zoom out and consider things like, wow, this bouncer really showed up on a bicycle.” Similar scenes populate an album that’s both familiar and deeply unstable.
Like its minimal production, Orlovich says “The Grace Notes” is a story told in the negative space from an album that pulls back the curtain on fundamental truths of performance and travel. Is anyone really listening? Feeling Fickle is the solo debut from a dynamic artist after decades on the move, embedded in some of the most exciting international underground scenes over the last two decades. The result is a remarkable diary in texture and insight asking how anyone got here.

THE INTERIOR DESIGN TAKES ITS CUES FROM ART DECO, WITH GEOMETRIC ELEMENTS, MOTIFS AND COMPOSITIONS THROUGHOUT THE SPACE. AN OVERALL BOLD GRAPHIC TREATMENT OF SYMMETRICAL PATTERNS IS JUXTAPOSED WITH EXOTIC PLANTS AND VELVET DRAPES, CREATING A THEATRICAL BACKDROP OF 1920S FLAIR.
THE OVERALL COLOR SCHEME IS BOLD IN CONTRAST WITH CREAM COLORED SUNBURST ART-DECO JEWELRY INSPIRED WALL SCONCES ADORNING THE BLACK ONYX WALLS THROUGHOUT THE SPACE. AT THE CENTER OF OF A LARGE SUNBURST FAN WITH MIRROR CLAD COLUMNS A LONG BAR IN A HIGH GLOSS BLACK LACQUER FINISH GREETS GUESTS AS THEY ENTER.
OVERLOOKING THE MAIN ROOM THE CHAMPAGNE BALCONY FEATURES VELVET CURTAIN DRAPES AND LIGHTER PASTELS- IN A GATSBY INSPIRED GARDEN LIKE COMPOSITION. THE MAIN ROOM WITH ITS DRAMATIC HIGH CEILINGS HAS A SKYSCRAPER INSPIRED SYMMETRICAL PATTERN OF STRIPES AND MIRRORS ALL AROUND WITH A BACK-LIT GEOMETRIC CENTERPIECE AS THE FOCAL POINT BEHIND THE DJ BOOTH. THE DISCO-LIGHTS ARE COMPLEMENTED BY THREE JEWEL LIKE HANGING LIGHT FIXTURES, IN BRIGHT COLORS OF RUBY, SAPPHIRE AND EMERALD.
THE CLUB ALSO SHOWCASES AN ON-PREMISES TOBACCO SHOPPE AND GENERAL STORE PROVIDING PATRONS WITH ANY NEEDFUL THING FOR A NIGHT ON THE TOWN. DESIGNED TO STAND OUT ON ITS OWN THE TOBACCO SHOPPE HAS WALLS AND CEILING IN AN OVER-SIZED HARLEQUIN PATTERN OF RICH RASPBERRY, BLACK AND PALE GREEN AS A BACKDROP TO THE BLACK SHOP COUNTER AND SHELVING. Convicted murderer Walker Loats is trapped in a timeless prison. Unexpectedly befriended by a moth with an offer of a perceived way to freedom, Walker must choose between paying her dues or taking a shortcut that offers to rig the game in her favor.
Oscillating between the confines of a tiny cell and an expansive visual world of animation, The Echo Drift unravels a cycle of deceit, temptation, seduction, and fantastical perception. Featuring a live chamber ensemble, electronics, and a six-channel surround sound system, this world premiere opera explores the freewheeling nature of the mind when it is robbed of external stimuli and questions, when in extreme circumstances, is it possible to act in a way that goes against one’s nature?

The Ceremony, a film about love and friendship, depicts cross-border relationships where dominance and submission are central. Audiences meet the fascinating and unusual writer Catherine Robbe-Grillet and those closest to her.
Catherine Robbe-Grillet, a sharp intellectual born in 1930, published her first book, L'image, in 1956. It was banned and publicly burned in Paris. After more than 50 years of exploring eroticism and the world of sadomasochism, today Robbe-Grillet is widely considered France's most famous dominatrix.
Intimate material reveals documentary participants sharing views on art, norms, identity, ageing, loneliness, friendship, and love. The spectator is invited into a fascinating, evocative, and private world depicting staged, stylized sadomasochist ceremonies based on Robbe-Grillet's universe.
For the 5th transformation the interior takes its inspiration from Silk Road. With collected patterns from regions spanning from Turkey to China the space is defined by a maze of screens made from 30x30cm large cardboard panels. The panels have laser cut patterns collected from various regions of the Silk Road; Turkey, Babylon, Syria, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and two different regions of China.
The panels are hanging from the ceiling hooks in formations from the entry going east, starting with patterns from Turkey stretching all the way through the space ending in the two different China patterns. Throughout the panels act as room dividers and are hung around light fixtures creating a play of light and shadow. The panels are spray painted in colors ranging from sand and light blues, through turquoise to the deep red of China.
The spatial design concept for Movement 2 is a play with scale. The space is defined by an installation of over-sized pine needles that create a movement across the ceiling. Stretching to the floor in some areas the pine needles act as room dividers.
Throughout the space little moments unveil the fantastical forest theme such as two moss-laden swings with miniature landscapes of plants and birds, bird houses nestled in the pine needles and various animal tracks on the floor, walls and selected tables.
The over table pendants are made from a sheet of stationary held together with a single staple. The stationary, screen printed bird motif on vintage typing paper, is designed by Adrienne Wong. The counter area light fixtures are made with live moss and small bulbs.

In this work, which is rooted in his home country of Brazil, Fernando Melo draws upon a modern paradox: people living in densely populated, hyperconnected urban settings often feel more lonely than people living in the most remote villages. With the pulse of live Brazilian percussion as its backdrop, If Walls Could Speak invites the audience to explore notions of anonymity and isolation in the fast-paced, repetitive rhythm of big city living.

"JUSTINE is the girl named after Justice. Justine is special. She is strong, she dares more than most and she knows definitely what justice is. She also knows that you are the ones you are. You are amazing and unique and do not have to be like everyone else. Being different is good!
She investigates what freedom can be. Perhaps the opposite of structure, organization and systems? Certainly there must be different ways to live and dress! With humor, but also with deep and respect, this new dance work takes life seriously.
Choreographer Charlotta Öfverholm, together with the scenographer Elle Kunnos de Voss, has created a space where the imagination gets space, each of which is unique and helps us to make justice."

What Happens When was a temporary restaurant installation that transformed every 30 days in a reclaimed space in New York City.
The project was a creative collaboration between chef John Fraser, Brand/graphic designer Emilie Baltz and Metrics principal Elle Kunnos de Voss.
Working on a shoestring budget we wanted to create a space that had an immediate impact, communicated the concept of change and was feasible within the limited time frame we were given. Our overall concept for the space is a 'work in progress' transparency into the design process as the architectural drawings are mapped out onto the dining room surfaces in 1:1, with each Movement change red lined to manifest the process and record the transformations.
The spatial concept for the First Movement is a monochromatic landscape of deconstructed volumes and fixtures, using a paired down aesthetic. White lines define volumes within the space, describing archetypal house and ladder shapes in a distorted perspective.
The deconstructed chandeliers take their cue from a classic chandelier with cut cardboard prisms and large globe light bulbs.

Inspired by Jazz, the 4th transformation explores the tension between improvisation and tradition, as well as the unique rhythm and architecture that defines this musical form. A non-traditional take on jazz, this Movement Elle Kunnos de Voss uses 9100ft of string to create different volumes throughout the space. This spatial rhythm throughout the room results in a visual cadence from the entrance all the way to the back that visually and spatially communicates the rhythm and contrast of Jazz. Amber tones of string hearken back to southern sunlight and remind guests of the birthplace of this unique American form of music.
The entryway welcomes guests with a taste of what’s to come with a collage of patterns and imagery that mix old photographs from New Orleans with abstract patterns that visually represent the tempo of jazz. Adding another “note” of reference, all the light fixtures are inspired by jazz line up instruments. Made from basic geometric shapes in bright colors, they are configured around the room at different heights.

Metrics principal Elle Kunnos de Voss was commisioned as one of the thirty international creatives to create a piece for the Beck's Green Box project launch. Other artists include: Nick Knight, Sam Spiegel, Arne Quinze, Kate MccGwire, Shaniqwa Jarvis, Austra, Kenneth Cappello, Hussein Chalayan, Bompass & Parr and UVA.
"Each of these outstanding collaborators was commissioned by Beck’s for the Green Box Project as they represent the true spirit of independent thinking. Beck’s hopes that each Green Box will open the minds of its viewers to their own independent thought – and inspire them to take part in the global project. With the initial works marking the start of something spectacular, Beck’s seeks to commission hundreds of green boxes, conceived by members of the public, to be installed throughout 2012." Beck's.
What Happens When - Movement 3 was inspired by Renoir's "The Luncheon of the Boating Party".
The space is designed around a few significant elements and coloring from the Renoir painting to re-create an intimate, communal experience reminiscent of 19th century time and place. A 8 meter long awning-like architectural stroke across the room frames the dining settings in warm spring like tones to re-create the communal intimate feeling of the painting.
The ceiling is lit with a string of large bulbs, that are thinly coated in pink and yellow, in a 'garden party' inspired configuration. Throughout the space branch-like light fixtures light up the tables outside the awning shape to create a play between interior and exterior The wall fixtures are designed to look like iconic Still lifes with white coated crystal glasses and fake grapes.

THE ECHO DRIFT
The Echo Drift is an opera about Walker Loats, a convicted felon, serving her seventh consecutive life sentence out of a total of fourteen at the Hersh Correctional Facility. We follow her during the course of five days as she awaits a verdict on her pending appeal to the Governor to have her sentence reduced. During this time Walker is befriended by a moth who disrupts her outlook on her verdict, time and the order of events that constitute her life.
At The Hersh Correctional Facility the staff had taken away all signifiers of time. There were no windows, no schedules, no “lights out”. When Walker arrived the idea of time had been reduced to "now" and "not now" setting the inmates adrift in a paralyzing haze of unknowing and guesswork. Walker quickly saw a business opportunity in this setup and started selling measurements of time as contraband to her fellow inmates.
The moth challenges Walker's provincial understanding of time and free will as well as her fraudulent little business. The moth offers Walker a temporal perspective unlimited by the confines of her spatial predicament, along with a way to slip through the rips in the fabric that has restricted her for what, at this point, must be ages.
The Echo Drift is the first creative collaboration between designer Elle Kunnos de Voss and composer Mikael Karlsson (both Swedes living in New York City).
The role of Walker Loats is performed by Metropolitan Opera soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra backed up by violin, piano and live electronics in a 6 channel surround system as well as a multitude of media, including animated sequences and characters.
The December 2, 2014 performance was a world premiere staged preview of the work presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC, Rough State Sound and Metrics Design Group.

BAR ARTISANAL
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN / INTERIOR DESIGN THE VAST SPACE AND DISTINCTIVE MATERIALS -- STONE, STEEL, BRASS, MIRRORS -- REFLECTS BOTH THE CLASSIC TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY FOOD MARKET THAT INSPIRES THE RESTAURANT'S CUISINE AND TRIBECA'S HISTORY AS AN INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT DOMINATED BY WAREHOUSES, ALL INFUSED WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR AND ANIMATION. WITH A DISTORTED GEOMETRY, FEATURING UNEXPECTED CONTRASTS IN BLACK AND WHITE, 20-FOOT FLOOR-TO-CEILING WINDOWS AND IRON LATTICEWORK COVERING THE CEILING AND MONUMENTAL COLUMNS, BAR ARTISANAL IS THEATRICAL IN SCALE AND DETAILS. MOMENTS OF PLAYFULNESS ARE CAREFULLY DESIGNED THROUGHOUT THE SPACE, LIKE ITS BACK-LIT ROOFTOP ILLUSION AND FLOOR TO CEILING MIRRORED WALLS IN THE DINING ROOM AND BATHROOMS.
THE SPACE IS DIVIDED INTO DISTINCT AREAS FOR A VARIETY OF EXPERIENCES. IT'S A MIX OF MODERN AND TRADITIONAL, SOPHISTICATED AND DRAMATIC WHILE BEING WARM AND INVITING. THESE INCLUDE A RELAXED, ALMOST-DECADENT SPACE AROUND A BRASS BAR WITH A BACK LIT IRON CURTAIN AS A BACKDROP. A LARGE JAMÓN & QUESO BAR WHERE GUESTS CAN ENJOY A FRONT-ROW VIEW OF THE STRIKING EARTH-STONE HEARTH.
